The
Buddhist Circuits
In
one of his last utterances before reaching the end, his Mahaparinirvana,
Buddha said to his favourite attendant, Anand:
There are these four places, Anand, which a believing person
should visit with feelings of reverence and awe. Which are
the four?
The places at which a believer can say, 'Here he was born'.
'Here he attained to supreme and perfect insight.' 'Here
the kingdom of righteousness was set on foot by him.' 'Here
he passed away in that utter passing-away that leaves nothing
whatsoever to remain behind.'
These
sites sacred to Buddhists the world over are Lumbini in Nepal,
and Bodhgaya, Sarnath and Kushinagar in India. Associated
with the life of Buddha are also Rajghir, Sravasti and Vaishali.
At Nalanda is the famous Buddhist monastery, 11 kms from Rajghir
in East Uttar Pradesh, North India.
